Satan’s Sunday

He followed me to church that day,
slipped in beside me,
nudged and whispered,
wanted me to focus on the draught,
the wind that wailed outside,
the toddler’s ceaseless chatter,
its mother’s shhhh ! !
Or someone’s hacking cough.
And then I thought -
none of my business, Satan.
Oh, God, how well the Whisperer knows
the way to interpose and give us other-focus
than what we come for !
For what we want to see
is not these things,
but Jesus.
