Distractions

"Satan trembles when we pray."
He does, but tries
his favourite ploy: distraction.
As children run at play,
as wind-borne Autumn leaves,
as pigeons scatter when they see the hawk,
as racing clouds before the storm,
so scatter thoughts, to my distress,
‘til, in revolt,
my soul cries out to You
and, suddenly, there’s quiet,
and Jesus, saying ‘Peace !’
