Overcomer

And in my dream I saw a Throne,
and One seated
all glorious, resplendent,
ringed with the righteous robed in white
and a banner blazoned
"Every man shall account himself to God".
As I drew nearer, a Voice
to each before me said
‘What is that in your hand ?’
and one said ‘virtue’, another ‘works’
another ‘ritual’, another ‘alms’.
As hands unclenched, I saw
ashes, only ashes !
Then it was my turn.
Again, the Voice -
‘What is that in your hand ?’
I showed Him -
a white stone !
I awoke.
Lord ! Lord ! Make me an overcomer !
