Name Calling

‘This fellow’, they said,
‘too fond of wine, a greedy feeder,
practised sinner,
deceiver, blasphemer.
In with the wrong crowd, y’know.
Oh, yes, and devil-driven, too’ !
Jesus, Master,
You bore those names for me,
patiently.
Be still, my soul:
what flack has come your way
is light affliction.
Forgive and bless them, Lord, as I must, truly,
my persecutors.
