Vows

How many resolutions lie,
confetti at my feet?
How often have I planned
to honour You in this and that
by lifelong faithfulness,
vowing what I could not give
in my humanity –
but wanting to?

And then You taught me
to promise not a holy life –
crushing commitment –
but, rather, a life of holy moments,
successive, separate
responses to your challenge in the now.
That I can cope with,
each decision purpose-wrapped;
each, token of my love for You:
These I can bring to you, Spirit-aided,
my God and King !
